Revisiting Meeting Discussion Topic

Read Aloud Book Selection

I shared this book with the class one afternoon and it brought up a lot of discussion how people all over the world may have similar experiences as we do, but in different ways.  This book highlights the consumption of bread.  Most of us eat bread, but depending on where you are in the world, the way you eat, buy, sell, and make bread can look different.  We had fun guessing where in the world the people in the photos were from and then checking the results in the index of the book.

We found that the woman carrying bread in a basket on her head in Ecuador, did so in a similar fashion as those in Africa do.  How did the children know this?  They were able to reference a favorite tale that I had read earlier in the year, Boundless Grace, who traveled to The Gambia, Africa and saw how people shopped differently there than they did back in the states.

In continuing our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day discussion from last week and the exploration of the concept of equity and fairness, I introduced the class to a historic figure that made a great change in American history when she was just six years old, just like them:  Ruby Bridges.  The video told the story of how she was one of the first children to help schools move towards desegregated education.

After the video, we discussed how Ruby's schooling experience was different from our own and how it was similar, even though it was something that happened in the past.  See our T-chart below.

  3. Emma talked about the tree project and with the pictures from Nikki's class we now understand all that was involved. We can't wait to see her art work. Thanks also for including the video of Ruby Bridges. She was excited to see the video again and that gave us an opportunity to talk more about equality.
