Committees, Vowels, Drills and MORE!

Hello families,

Check out all the practice we squeezed into this short week!

Our class has been moving forward on two different committees and their work has been coming along beautifully.  One of the committees is the Game Board Drawing Committee, which is working on creating our first class board game titled, Alien Chase in Space, inspired by our friend Ronny's homework share.  They are taking into consideration the suggestions for what illustrations should be on the game's background from the Game Board Planning Committee's brainstorm, including planets, stars, rockets, and more!  Come in to check out their work.

The other committee is our Forest Planning Committee.  These friends are thinking about different ways they could organize the tools brought in by different friends to make our own forest using materials found in nature.

During Revisiting Meeting, this committee was asked to share their initial plans with the group.  Come check out our Discussion Binder to read how they explained their ideas and what feedback and critique the audience gave them to consider for new tries.

This week, we met with our 7th Grade Buddies and taught them how to play Doggy Doggy Where's Your Bone?  They all did a great job of sticking to the agreements of the game!

Thank you to Bridget, Sienna's mom, for being this week's Family Reader!

We played a fun new language game to help us practice becoming more familiar with our vowel names and sounds, called Change the Vowel.  You pick a word and identify which vowels are in it.  You pick one to take away and change into a different vowel.  Read the word together using the new vowel sound.  They can become pretty silly!  We used our names since we are so familiar with them now, but you can play this game with any word!  Have fun playing this at home together to keep practicing these important skills.

Check out some of our ideas from this week's Number Talks.  We are getting so much practice in seeing different ways to see a number!  How do you see these numbers?

We ended our week by having our first Earthquake and Fire Drill.  We practiced ducking and covering, staying away from anything that might fall on us, being silent, brave, listening for instructions and staying safe.  These  friends did an amazing job at following through with the agreements and were very proud of themselves.

Lastly, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to all of our friends for successfully completing their first Student Led Conference!  They generated these agreements together to help them prepare and do their best try.  Thank you to all the Listeners, too, for being present and respectful of everyone's time.  Everyone did a great job!

Have a great rest of your weekend!
Love, Gaby

  1. Hi Gaby,

Jackson and daddy worked on reading Jackson's name with different vowels. They came up with Jickson, Juckson, and other funny names! Jackson wants to say, "I love you. And I'll see you tomorrow. Love, Jackson." Thanks for the great blog post! Jennifer
