San Diego Food Bank

Hello Kindergarten Families,

Thank you to Betsy (Eli), Bridget (Sienna), Diva (Zion), Elizabeth (Kellen), Ida (Gavin), Jennifer (Hailey), Jennifer (Jackson), Lea (Miranda), and Tanya (Tiffany) for joining us on our trip to the San Diego Food Bank.

The day before our trip, the friends counted all of the items in the Food Drive Bin and found that our class had collected 70 pieces of food.  Their goal was to collect 30 more pieces so that they could get to 100.  In one night, with all of your help, we were able to more than DOUBLE our collection and turn in 158 pieces of food to the Food Bank!  Thank you for your generosity!

We were greeted by Sandy and Cynthia who reviewed some safety agreements about walking through the warehouse and watching out for the fork lifts.  They also answered a few questions the children had about the ins and outs of their program.

As we walked through the facility, we saw how the different boxes of food are stored and organized.  We got to see how the volunteers sift through the fresh produce that is donated.

We heard about the different programs that the Food Bank supports by collecting food in these red bins, such as donations for the holiday seasons, filling backpacks with food for children to take home on the weekends, summer long programs for children who are not getting access to school lunches, boxes of food for the elderly and more.

The food we collected was put on a cart and placed on a ground scale.

It weighed 266lbs with the cart, so minusing that extra weight, we collected 139lbs of food!  Great work everyone!

If you would like to see other programs the Food Bank participates in or how you can contribute, please go their >>>WEBSITE<<< for more information.

Love, Gaby

  5. Love that our children had a chance to see where their donations are held distributed from. I have had a chance to volunteer here myself and I love how the process is so easy. After signing up online, the schedule is available online as well and so you choose the time slot that is available and convenient for you and show up! My teenage son loved volunteering as well and plans to come back! Don't forget closed toe shoes though!
