Track and Field, the Year of the Monkey and MORE!!!

Hello!

Enjoy these snapshots from our first week in February together!

Outdoor Education with Carolina

Friends ran through another relay, practicing hopping, running, jumping, and zig zagging.  What was challenging for them?  What have they gotten better at?

Meeting with our 4th Buddies

This week, the Scientist Friends reconnected with their Buddy.  We went on a Walk and Talk around school.  We practiced our safety agreements as we chatted and built connections.  Friends got a chance to talk about the Home Days, what they were working on in class and what plans they had for after school.  What did your child learn about their new friend?

Estimation Jar

I introduced a jar of seed pods and asked the class to share their estimation of how many there were in the jar.  We went around for a morning share and friends' guesses ranged from 5-101.

On a new day, I gave them a reference point of what 3 seed pods looked like.  We went around and checked if anyone wanted to change their estimation based on what they now know, and range of responses changed from 6-85.  You can click on the image of the list to see more.

We then emptied out the pods and grouped our work by 3's and found out how many items were actually in the jar.  We will be doing this activity again to continue our practice of making "careful guesses."

Domino Math

I invited friends to practice their addition, equation writing and computation skills with the help of dominoes.  By adding the number of dots on each side of the domino, friends were able to calculate how many dots there were in total.

ASL with Joann

What new signs has your child learned?  Ask them to teach you so that they can continue practicing at home!  Enjoy learning together.

Garden Studies with Mary

Mary has been asking the Scientist Friends what they would like to focus on in the garden.  Here are some of their ideas:

Grow sunflowers
Grown purple flowers
Grow squash
Grow plants that attract bees
Grow native plants
Make bee boxes
Grow an apple tree
Grow food
Decorate the rocks in the garden
Take care of the plants

Which idea interests your child?

Outdoor Education with Coach Curry

This week, friends started doing Track and Field.  Friends learned what a two point stance was, how to do a snake coil, how to pump their arms, how to breathe, sprint, and how to use the person in front of them as motivation to do their best.

Family Reader

Thank you Sally for bringing in a story and artifacts to help our friends learn about the Chinese New Year.  Happy Year of the Monkey!

A New Year's Outfit

It is a custom to give children red envelopes with money.  Ask your child how much money they received.  Here's the tip they received:  A nickle is a 5 bundle and a penny is a 1.  How much did1 nickle and 3 pennies make?  This number is good luck in China!

Welcome Baby Arianna!

Thank you to all the families that helped make Fay and Ariana's Sprinkle so special!

Love, Gaby
