Point Loma Water Treatment Center Facility

Hello Scientist Friends and families,

Here is a review of our visit to the Water Treatment Center.  Enjoy going over these photos together!

Our tour guide Daniel answered a lot of our burning questions about where water goes after it goes down the drain and how it gets to our houses, ready to drink.  But mostly, he told us about how our waste water gets cleaned and returned into the ocean.

Time to visit the grounds!

Grit is all of the fine waste that goes down the drains, like coffee grounds and egg shells, for example, that get filtered out.  It turns out that pouring coffee grounds down the drain is REALLY bad and ruins the pipes in the cleaning process!  Time to start a home compost for those bad boys!

Want to see what water looks like when it gets to the Water Treatment Center?  It ain't pretty... nor does it smell very good!

This is Jason.  He handles our waste water.  Thanks Jason!

In that shed, all the big bits of waste get filtered and raked out of the water, like sticks, rocks, toys, etc.

Here, Daniel shows us about the different cleaning solutions that get mixed into the water, including an odor eliminating agent that reduces our sense of smell, temporarily.

Underneath our feet, the water is being filtered and cleaned.  We got to see what it looked like.

Daniel shows us how a water sample that is still in the filtering process coagulates so that all of the black sludge sinks to the bottom.

We got to see how they monitor each station's progress.

At the end of the tour, we go to see what a sample of the water looks like right before it is released back into the ocean!  As clean as it gets!

And this is how our beach water stays clean!

Thank you to all the families that helped us get to this informative field trip!

Love, Gaby
