It's a Special Word!

Good morning Artistic Scientists' families!

I hope you all had a nice weekend in spite of the gloomy weather.  Stay safe on the roads!

Last week the class dove deeper into the world of NOUNS.  We as a group had already discussed what nouns represent people, places, and things and can quickly identify them in our world.  The children are testing out the terms proper noun and pronoun now, and are figuring out how to identify and distinguish them.

Proper nouns were pretty easy for the students to understand.  As soon as we inspected why some words started with an upper case letters, and some did not, they understood that those words were special words.  Words, or names of people and places.  Special words, like our names (Gaby, Clara, Christine, etc) and or names of places (San Diego, Innovations Academy, etc) start with upper case letters, but not common nouns like school, or city.

I read a book to the class,  that helped us understand a little bit more about pronouns and how it helps decrease the amount of repetition!  We tried out a few sentences to play with this idea of repetition and replaced proper nouns with the appropriate pronouns.  This is the first type of function of the pronoun we focused on, but there are SO many uses for them!

The other part of speech that has been introduced to the friends is the adjective!  Adjectives are the types of words that describe a noun.  We brainstormed a list of a few adjectives and saw how different adjectives can change a sentence.

In other news, we have been continuing our exploration on migratory birds and have honed down some of the categories that the students feel are important to learn about:

The next step was to decide which birds we will be exploring....

The students took a secret vote, writing the number ( 1 ) for birds from all over the wold, ( 2 ) for birds from America, ( 3 ) for birds from California, and ( 4 ) for birds from San Diego, onto a folded piece of paper and putting it into a bowl.  After tallying the results, the vote showed that we would be selecting birds from all over the world!  This will give us the opportunity to learn more about different migratory routes and to become an expert on one bird in particular!  I'm excited to see which birds different friends choose.  Stay tuned to see how you can help us do our research!

Have you heard of the 3-Clues Mystery Box?  After discretely placing something into a box, I wrote down three clues, describing it.  After reading the clues to the students, we would re-check them to see if they matched the persons' guess.  If they did, I wrote it down on the "What it COULD be..." list, but if it did not match, I would write down on the "What it could NOT be..." list.  Check out what the kids thought could be in the 3-Clues Mystery Box the first two times we played it!

Now that the students understand how to play, they will have the opportunity to take the 3-Clues Mystery Box home!  Ashley was the first friend to get her name pulled out of the Name Basket.  Here are her clues:

Did you guess it correctly?

In other news, we had lovely time with our 8th Grade Buddies!  We started off getting to look at their masks and poems that they had displayed around their rooms.  It's always nice sharing your beautiful work with friends...

They then taught us a new gamed called, Park Bench.  One person sits on a "bench" and someone joins them shortly after.  The person on the "bench" uses clues from their friend's actions to guess WHO they are pretending to be.  I wish I could figure out how to put the video footage of Lincoln and Lyla being brave and playing the game!

Afterwards, we put our gloves on and headed out to clean up the school's "Backyard!"

Love, Gaby
